Match Summary
Captain Cesc Fabregas was back to his best as Arsenal beat Bolton 4-1 in a scintillating encounter at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal started brightly, as Rocicky played a sumptuous through ball from the outside of his right foot to set up Arshavin, who shot straight at the keeper. This was the easiest of three great chances that Arshavin missed in the first half. Arsenal opened the scoring after Wilshere played a teasing ball into the area, which Cesc flicked on to Koscielny for a tap in. However, Koscielny’s lack of premier league experience was exposed again as he got his header back from an awkward ball completely wrong, allowing Lee
to capitalize. Almunia was sucked into the ball as Lee crossed for Elmander to head into the empty net.
Arsenal started the second half well, with in form Fabregas playing Chamakh through, but the Moroccan striker was unable to take the chance. Moments later, the two players combined again; Fabregas crossed for Chamakh to bullet in a pin point header. Arsenal had regained the lead.
Later on their was a moment of controversy when the referee sent off Gary Cahill for taking out Koscielny on the bye line. It wasn’t a good challenge but to be honest, a yellow card would have sufficed. My guess is that this decision was influenced by the referee feeling guilty for not showing a second yellow to Kevin Davies, who was all out to prove that Wenger was wrong to defend him as a player who was not ‘dirty’.
Despite being a goal and a man up, the game was still hanging in the balance as Bolton looked to threaten from set pieces. However, Song soon calmed down our nerves after scoring a lovely third goal. He collected a pass in the box from Arshavin, took a brilliant first touch to set up the chance and finished it off in Messi-esq style.
Arsenal were completely in control now, passing the ball with confidence to the ‘ole ole’ of the crowd. And after 23 ‘oles’, Cesc played a delightful pass over the top of the Bolton defense to set up Vela, who was clearly tempted to chip but instead he coolly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to score a superb fourth for Arsenal.
Overall, this is a great result, but the score line does not completely reflect the true nature of the game. Arsenal again made lives difficult for themselves by missing loads of chances in the first half, only to be pegged back to 1-1 after poor defending by Koscielny. Although Koscielny appeared reasonably solid throughout apart from the mistake, we do have to worry that this is the second consecutive high profile error that he has made that has resulted in us conceding. Squilaci on the other hand looked very solid. Arsenal will also have to worry about the extent of Abou Diaby’s injury; the substitute was subbed off just 10 minutes after his appearance after a horrible tackle by Paul Robinson.
Things look bright as Arsenal are second in the table, two points ahead of Manchester United who again dropped points today. Good result today. Now we have to get ready for Champions League football, with a home game against Braga.
