Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal 4 October 2010 (04/10/10)

Match Opinion

Like Arsene Wenger said, you cant win titles if you don't take your chances. Not a bad performance considering the number of players we were missing, but if we don't start to learn from our mistakes, we will never improve.

Arsenal 2-3 West Brom 25 September 2010 (25/09/10)

Match Summary

A poor, complacent, and toothless performance which is not acceptable. Lack of ability-as in Almunia's case- can be blamed on the manager for sticking with him, but lack of effort by some players can not be tolerated. Suddenly our good start to the season is ruined, and a lot depends on the next game against Chelsea.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-4 Arsenal 21 September 2010 (22/09/2010)

Match Summary

What a great night for gooners! Arsenal thrashed Sp*rs 4-1 (AET) at White Hart Lane to knock Sp*rs out of the Carling Cup and qualify for the next round.

Lansbury opened the scoring tapping in a great low cross from Wilshere. Gibbs would have made it 2-0 if it weren't for some typically poor officiating from the linesman, who wrongly ruled him offside when he had rounded off the keeper and was clean through. The first half ended with Arsenal leading 1-0 after completely dominating throughout the half.

Spurs leveled the score early in the second half through Robby Keane. The sp*rs striker was clearly offside, but there was no flag from the linesman. Along with the official, people will also blame Fabianski for the goal, who really should have done better to save Keane's effort.

The 90 minutes ended with the score at 1-1, with only some very poor refereeing decisions preventing Arsenal from winning in normal time. However Arsenal won two quick penalties early in the first half of extra times to secure the victory. Arshavin scored Arsenal's fourth with a neat finish to put the icing on the cake.

All in all a great deserved victory for Arsenal. Hope for more of the same this weekend against West Brom.

Have a look at what Szczensy has to say about Wenger over here, and show your opinion in the poll.

Arsenal 1-1 Sunderland 18th September 2010 (18/09/2010)

Match Summary

Today wasn't the best of days to be a gooner, and I would perfectly understand if you are not looking forward to downloading the goals or highlights. So please take a little bit of time to read my opinion and give your feedback.

Arsenal drew 1-1 away at Sunderland- a game in which a draw was probably the fair result but the nature in which we conceded the equalizer made it feel even worse than a defeat. There's no point in me doing a match report because you can read much better material elsewhere, but there are some points which I'd like to touch upon.

- Jack Wilshere is a great player, an amazing talent with a very bright future, but starting him for the third consecutive game away at Sunderland was questionable. And his lack of experience showed as we were unable to control the midfield in the first half. Still, credit goes to him for the way he recovered in the second half but maybe Rosicky or Denilson would've been better options to start?

-Cesc Fabregas is a player who always gives his 100% no matter what; the other day he chased after a lost cause when we were leading 3-0, resulting in the Arshavin cross for his second, and Arsenal's fourth goal. Although his hard-work, commitment and desire are much appreciated and an example for all other players, my question is that should Wenger have withdrawn him at half time/ 60min mark? Or should Cesc himself have eased up a bit considering that we had already won the game and we knew that we had an important away game in 3 days time? I know that I'm criticizing him for working hard!! And that if he didn't give his 100% the "his mind is in Barcelona" bandwagon would be thrilled, but I tend to agree with John Cross that playing three games in a week giving 100% at Arsenal's pace has got something to do with his injury. I just hope it's nothing longterm, and at least he's back for Stamford Bridge.

-Why did Rosicky take the penalty when Nasri was higher up in the pecking order- as Wenger says?

-Those of you who watch Arsenal games regularly would testify that Gael Clichy is getting into a habit of making too many naive mistakes too often- some of which have cost us dearly. You always remember the Clichy of 2007-08 season and wonder what happened to him. For the past two seasons I have forgiven him for his mistakes, on account of him being 'out of form' and 'coming back from injury', always hoping that he will be back to his best. I always hoped that he will learn from his mistakes and try to cut them out. But that has not happened, and for me, today's mistake was one too many. I know that Gibbs, like Wilshere, is far from the complete product, but is the experienced Clichy performing any better? Should we give more chances to Gibbs?

There are so many other what ifs: What if Arshavin or Song had scored their chances? What if Nasri had taken the penalty? What if Wenger had used his third substitute in the stoppage time? And finally what if Denilson had gone to the corner flag instead of shooting in the final moments?

However, whats done is done. Many of us would've taken a draw after our first half performance, and after the Song sending off. We should praise our goalkeeper and both of our central defenders who were pretty much immaculate. Denilson was also very good and helped us control the second half pretty well.

My main worry is not the two points lost; I fear that the psychological effect on our team as a whole on conceding so late, especially on Rosicky, may be worse than the actual result. How many times did Wenger say last season that we need to cut down our individual mistakes? How many times did our captain say that? I really hope we show the mental strength to recover from this result. Our reserves side beating Sp*rs away in midweek would be great for a start.

Arsenal 6-0 Sporting Braga 15th September 2010 (15/09/2010)

Match Summary

Arsenal opened their Champions League campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of Sporting Braga at the Emirates Stadium.

Cesc Fabregas was inspirational once again, with Wilshere, Chamakh, and Vela also putting in strong performances.

We should be high on confidence for the away game at Sunderland this weekend.

Saturday, September 11, 2010

Arsenal 4-1 Bolton Wanderers 11th September 2011 (11/09/2010)

Match Summary

Captain Cesc Fabregas was back to his best as Arsenal beat Bolton 4-1 in a scintillating encounter at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal started brightly, as Rocicky played a sumptuous through ball from the outside of his right foot to set up Arshavin, who shot straight at the keeper. This was the easiest of three great chances that Arshavin missed in the first half. Arsenal opened the scoring after Wilshere played a teasing ball into the area, which Cesc flicked on to Koscielny for a tap in. However, Koscielny’s lack of premier league experience was exposed again as he got his header back from an awkward ball completely wrong, allowing Lee to capitalize. Almunia was sucked into the ball as Lee crossed for Elmander to head into the empty net.
Arsenal started the second half well, with in form Fabregas playing Chamakh through, but the Moroccan striker was unable to take the chance. Moments later, the two players combined again; Fabregas crossed for Chamakh to bullet in a pin point header. Arsenal had regained the lead.

Later on their was a moment of controversy when the referee sent off Gary Cahill for taking out Koscielny on the bye line. It wasn’t a good challenge but to be honest, a yellow card would have sufficed. My guess is that this decision was influenced by the referee feeling guilty for not showing a second yellow to Kevin Davies, who was all out to prove that Wenger was wrong to defend him as a player who was not ‘dirty’.
Despite being a goal and a man up, the game was still hanging in the balance as Bolton looked to threaten from set pieces. However, Song soon calmed down our nerves after scoring a lovely third goal. He collected a pass in the box from Arshavin, took a brilliant first touch to set up the chance and finished it off in Messi-esq style.

Arsenal were completely in control now, passing the ball with confidence to the ‘ole ole’ of the crowd. And after 23 ‘oles’, Cesc played a delightful pass over the top of the Bolton defense to set up Vela, who was clearly tempted to chip but instead he coolly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to score a superb fourth for Arsenal.

Overall, this is a great result, but the score line does not completely reflect the true nature of the game. Arsenal again made lives difficult for themselves by missing loads of chances in the first half, only to be pegged back to 1-1 after poor defending by Koscielny. Although Koscielny appeared reasonably solid throughout apart from the mistake, we do have to worry that this is the second consecutive high profile error that he has made that has resulted in us conceding. Squilaci on the other hand looked very solid. Arsenal will also have to worry about the extent of Abou Diaby’s injury; the substitute was subbed off just 10 minutes after his appearance after a horrible tackle by Paul Robinson.
Things look bright as Arsenal are second in the table, two points ahead of Manchester United who again dropped points today. Good result today. Now we have to get ready for Champions League football, with a home game against Braga.
